Trend Spotlight: Serenity

The phrase at home, according to Webster’s Dictionary, means in harmony with the surroundings.  Today’s world is demanding.  We are bombarded with calls, texts, and emails. We have to-do lists, activities with friends, and appointments.  But what happens when you rush through the door of your home, heave your grocery bags on the counter and stagger to the living room to ease the shoes off your weary feet?

You feel at home.  The nagging insistence of the outside world fades away as you sink into your favorite taupe armchair, snuggle up against a pale blue pillow and pull a soft, deep blue throw up to your chin…

One of the current trends home and furniture designers are seeing is the Serenity trend.  The home is supposed to be a haven.  Inspiring the element of calm is what Serenity is all about.

COLORS

Get the blues. The hallmark of the Serenity trend is blue.  From blues that move toward the neutral side with grey undertones to rich twilight shades, blue is the color of calm.  Think of the sky just after a summer storm rolls away.  Imagine blue river stones at the bottom of a babbling brook.  This blue is natural and soothing.

All the leaves are brown.  A soft taupe color goes quite well with the natural blues.  It doesn’t compete but complements it perfectly.

And the sky is grey.  Grey is a lovely accent for the serenity trend and the foundation of the blues it supports.

TEXTURES

This trend is geared toward calming consistency.  Exploring a few different textures will add depth to the design but be sure that you keep patterns fairly subtle.  All fabrics, including performance fabrics, can be a part of the serene look.

INSPIRATION

How does it make you feel?  Designers who focus on the Serenity trend are intent on creating an atmosphere of calm tranquility.  This trend is aimed toward giving homes a balanced and undemanding look.  It shouldn’t compete for your attention with all of the other noise of the day; rather, it offers a respite from the chaos.

Serenity as a trend is inherently calming.  It should make people feel grateful to be home, surrounded by things and colors that are like a healing balm for a weary soul.   Serenity now?  Indeed.
