Trend Spotlight: Mesa

Have you ever been to the high desert near sunset? The sky above you explodes in streaks of deep oranges, purples, yellows and reds. The ground beneath your feet almost pulsates with heat while the red-orange and brown tones of the sand and stones reflect the fading light.  The beauty is visceral and profound.  It is almost as if the earth is wrapping its arms around you.

The Mesa trend is inspired by this desert beauty. Designers use elements of Mesa to create a warm and inviting presence that resonates with the flavor of ancient heritage and tradition. The trend uses natural dyes with those sun-drenched colors that warm your bones and delight your senses with earthy connectivity.

Colors

Orange crush. Think clay pots, sunsets and even autumn leaves. The Mesa trend pulls from the deep reddish oranges that we find prevalent in nature.

Red, red wine. Again, the reds in the Mesa trend are deep and tend to be darker than, say, a cherry red.  You want the reds to blend seamlessly with the oranges in the design.

Mocha latte. Brown is a basic earth tone. Use tans and browns as a neutral base to the more rich oranges and reds.

Textures

As with many of the current design trends, natural textiles with a handcrafted feel are predominant in the Mesa trend. Use textures that are warm, inviting and, preferably, handmade. To counterbalance, use smooth stoneware or earthy ceramics as table tops, planters and even artwork.

Inspiration

How does it make you feel? Mesa ties us into the ancient traditions of the people who populated our earth centuries ago. It brings to mind strong hands working within the parameters of a rich heritage passed down for generations. It’s a trend that provides a rich connection to the earth and the people who came before us.

Mesa Stone, the medium used for beautiful ancient carvings, was thought to have qualities promoting increased awareness and intuition. Perhaps by incorporating the Mesa colors and textures into our design, we can create warm and inviting atmospheres ripe for creating new traditions for future generations.
